Tortillera (2022) – Luis José Ramírez Cortés

From the series Códigos Mexicanos

She walks through a sea of memories.
Steady in her stride, calm in her balance, the tortillera carries her daily work: corn, warmth, life. The basket on her head is more than a burden—it is knowledge, passed from hand to hand, from generation to generation.

Around her, figures dissolve into light and motion. Musicians, dancers, workers, playing bodies appear like fleeting signs, painted in turquoise and blue—traces of a collective memory. These are scenes of everyday life that come and go, while she remains. Still. Present. Unshakeable.

Luis José Ramírez Cortés places the tortillera at the center of a luminous space where the ordinary regains its dignity. Her earthy colors anchor the image, while the background floats like a dream of voices, rhythms, and paths. Thus she becomes the axis around which life turns—unassuming, yet indispensable.

As part of the series Códigos Mexicanos, this work reads daily life as a secret script. It speaks of labor as ritual, of movement as memory, and of a culture that reveals itself not through spectacle, but through daily practice.

Born in Oaxaca, the artist Luis José Ramírez Cortés, trained at the Academy of San Carlos and the University of the Arts in Warsaw, combines traditional motifs with a contemporary visual language. His works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at art biennials. He currently works with Mexhaus / Ramirez Handels, where this original artwork is also available. A certificate of authenticity is included.

Tortillera is a quiet homage to the women who carry everyday life—and an image that does not explain Mexico, but makes it felt.
