Platanero (2022) – Luis José Ramírez Cortés
From the series “Códigos Mexicanos”
Luis José Ramírez Cortés, an artist from Oaxaca with international training and exhibition experience, dedicates his series Códigos Mexicanos to the everyday life of Mexico—not as mere documentation, but as a poetic distillation of cultural identity. Platanero is a representative work from this series: a visual poem about labor, community, and the dignity of the ordinary.
At the center of the painting stands a street vendor, calmly arranging plantains on a plate. His mobile cart—green and white, with a smoking oven—resembles an altar to daily life. The scene is dynamic, infused with movement: in the background, purple silhouettes dance, play, and stroll, appearing like memories or spirits of the community. A yellow dog, almost like a guardian of the scene, adds a playful touch.
The color palette is deliberately chosen: the light purple background evokes a dreamlike atmosphere, while the darker figures act as shadows of collective memory. Ramírez Cortés uses color not only as an aesthetic tool but as a cultural code—a reference to spirituality, celebration, and the depth of the everyday.
Platanero is more than a scene from Oaxaca. It is a symbol of the invisible labor that sustains the social fabric. The vendor represents self-reliance, tradition, and familial continuity. The anonymous figures in the background point to the community that gives this work its meaning. The painting raises questions: Who is seen? Who remains in the shadows? And how can dignity in everyday life be artistically revealed?
Ramírez Cortés’ education at the Academy of San Carlos and the University of the Arts in Warsaw is reflected in his confident fusion of Mexican visual tradition and European graphic precision. His works have been exhibited at international biennials—Platanero is an example of how local scenes can gain global relevance.
This work is not just a painting, but a cultural statement. It invites us to discover Mexico through the lens of everyday life—with respect, curiosity, and artistic depth.
