Tejatera (2022) – Luis José Ramírez Cortés
From the series “Códigos Mexicanos”
At the heart of Tejatera stands a woman behind a simple table. Her movements are calm and assured: she scoops, she pours, she offers. In the large green bowl, the drink gathers—light, frothy, alive—while the painted cups wait, ready for the next moment of sharing. It is a scene without haste, carried by the quiet rhythm of everyday life.
The figure is clear and present, yet her face remains open, almost timeless. Warm tones of pink, blue, and green glow against the bright background. Around her unfolds a gentle cosmos of ochre silhouettes: vendors, musicians, children, people in motion. Like memories or fleeting thoughts, they drift through the space, making the market palpable—as sound, as movement, as atmosphere.
Tejatera is part of the series “Códigos Mexicanos”, in which Ramírez Cortés translates the everyday life of Mexico into a distinctive visual language. Here, people, goods, and colors merge into a mosaic of daily life. Every line feels like an echo of the streets, every hue like a spark of lived experience. The market becomes a symbol of a Mexico that is both ancient and contemporary, full of rhythm, full of stories, full of heart.
The artist, originally from Oaxaca, has devoted himself to art since his youth. After studying Fine Arts at the Academy of San Carlos and completing postgraduate studies in Graphic Arts at the University of the Arts in Warsaw, his works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at renowned art biennials. Today, he collaborates with Mexhaus/Ramírez Handels and presents original works on the theme “Everyday Life in Mexico.”
